mythos machine plaster | clay | hard drives | time

Growing up in Colorado provided access to many natural wonders such as massive rock formations, caves, and abandoned buildings from old prospector mining towns. Naturally I explored all of these places with friends growing up and experienced their mystery and beauty. However, its pretty quick to realize the magic of these places usually does not stretch beyond experiencing them. I always wished there was something else, something more profound and unknown/ancient about these places despite their natural wonder. I decided even though I would not be able to experience it the way others will, I wanted to plant the seeds for greater mysteries in these locations for others who have an exploratory itch. I began to build a story of an undiscovered underground city and a race of people who lived there, but occasionally came up through caves to interact with the surface world. After writing a manuscript containing the history/origin story of this race of beings, I encoded it with a cypher and included a key, which would take time to work through with all the information. I put this information on flash drives and waterproofed them in a seal. I then created several plaster molds of my own face and submerged the flash drives into the plaster after sealing them inside of clay pods. I used triangular symbol to connect all of the pieces with a common icon and hid each face in several the wonderful places I used to explore, anchoring them in each location with poured plaster: not difficult to break, but just enough to keep them from being “stolen” by any ol’ curious explorer right away). I sculpted many smaller “artifacts” out of clay which I dispersed all over the city. Each small artifact contained the same triangular icon as the faces containing the cyphered story, and each has coordinates carved into them which lead to one of the faces: each artifact containing different coordinates. A few years after completing this work, many of the small artifacts have been collected and one of the faces has been taken from its location. I created this piece knowing I would never get to experience how people reacted to discovering these artifacts or if anyone broke them open and figured out the mystery hidden within, but I know I played a part in expanding the magic within these places for future people who explore them.

mimir plaster | 3D printing | compact disks | organic material | foam | wood

Made in partnership with artist and filmmaker Robert C. Stokes. Mimir is a piece named after the norse protector of the well of knowledge. Essentially, this piece acts as a time capsule 3D printed and sealed with the intention to last thousands of years. Recordings were made of human walk cycles, body scaling with rulers for reference, vocal samples, etc, along with DNA samples from both artists. This information was compressed and placed on a compact-disk along with a compressed file containing the entirety of Wikipedia, effectively all the knowledge and information compiled by mankind over the course of our existence. Any normal compact disk would degrade over a decade or two and completely lose all of its contained information. This data was burned onto a “millennium disk” which etches the information into incredibly thin stone contained within the disk which allows the information on it to effectively last for millennia and potentially “forever.” All this information was sealed within the printed container and placed in the hands of its guardian. The piece has been buried in an undisclosed location with magnets (which will not effect or degrade the data contained on the disk) in order for it to be easier to locate in the distant future. Created to preserve the information of mankind and the world as it is now for future evolutions of humanity or extraterrestrials in the event that a catastrophic occurrence destroys most of the information and people who exist.
